It is recently demonstrated that inflammation in the pancreas drives β-cell dysfunction early in the course of exocrine disease in chronic pancreatitis before the onset of clinical diabetes. Since, chronic pancreatits affects comparatively the young in India, better understanding of the progression from β-cell dysfunction to diabetes mellitus is critical to develop screening tools for early detection and intervention.
